Smarter Hospital Operations

On 11 June 2026, ExaApp was among the speakers at an IHIT Webinar co-organized by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and the Hospital Authority (HA). The event attracted an audience of more than 500 HA staff members.

Representing ExaApp, Lawrence Chu, Director and CTO, presented “Smarter Hospital Operations: AI across the In-Hospital Journey.” The session focused on practical scenarios in which AI can assist healthcare teams—not as a standalone technology, but as part of the systems and workflows staff already use. Lawrence explored how operational AI can help teams respond to changing patient demand, coordinate resources, and reduce repetitive planning work while keeping people in control.

Practical AI Across the Hospital Journey

AI can support many operational decisions across an in-hospital journey. Examples include identifying emerging bottlenecks, balancing workloads between service stations, recommending the next appropriate patient step, and giving staff a clearer real-time view of changing conditions.

The sharing also covered workforce-planning scenarios, where AI can help turn complex staffing needs, availability, skills, leave, working rules, and staff preferences into a reviewable duty roster. In each scenario, AI provides timely recommendations and operational insights while healthcare teams retain responsibility for final decisions.

ExaFlow: AI-Assisted Patient Journeys

ExaApp introduced the key functions of ExaFlow, its patient journey system for coordinating care activities across a facility. ExaFlow helps teams monitor patient progress, understand station workloads, and manage patient routing in real time.

Its AI-assisted routing can recommend patient journeys using workload and wait-time signals. A centralized operational view helps teams spot delays, while patient notifications and journey guidance keep people informed about their next steps. Staff can adjust routes when clinical or operational exceptions require human judgment.

ExaPlan: Explainable AI Duty Rostering

ExaApp also shared the functions of ExaPlan, its explainable, AI-assisted duty rostering system. ExaPlan helps planners produce roster drafts while balancing coverage, skills, availability, leave, fairness, staff preferences, and working rules.

Planners can review the reasoning behind recommendations, identify staffing gaps and potential conflicts, compare alternatives, and make changes before publishing a roster. This approach reduces repetitive planning effort while preserving the experience and accountability of workforce managers.

The webinar reflected ExaApp’s focus on secure, practical, and human-controlled AI that helps healthcare operations move more smoothly from workforce preparation to the patient’s in-hospital journey.
